Note Properties

The default property outline.

• Filename in kebab-case. Ex. vault-legend
• Created & updated dates
• aliases is the normal, not safe-character name of the file. Ex. Vault Legend
• up: property if relevant
• source: property if relevant
• text: property if relevant // While similar, source & text are not the same. The former may link to websites or other notes, whereas the latter links to files containing the source text (usually PDFs).
• tags: category note belongs to. See Tags below.
• There used to be a related property but now I just write any relations in the body of the note, as it makes me elaborate more, even if I don’t write much.
• There are additional properties depending on the template used to create the note.

Tags

• Pluralized
• Indicate the type of note (i.e. articles, meta notes, calendar notes, etc.)
• I’m still trying to develop a tagging system that suits my needs. I am in the constant need of cleaning obsolete tags up. We’ll see how it develops.

Certainty Tags

This is one of the many things I discovered through Gwern’s site. This is my implementation of it. While I don’t see a huge use case for this right now, I do think that I might be able to discover something useful from it eventually. Because it is something new in my vault, most notes will not have a certainty tag attached to it.

Note Hierarchy

Overall tagging of notes is loosely inspired by alchemy.

• If the note is a category (such as music) give it the “gold” tag.
  • Any note that can fall under this umbrella note, will point to it in the “up” property.
• Any note of substance (isn’t one speck of information) that is mostly written by myself/is of personal relevance to me will have the “silver” tag.
  • If a note of substance has not been developed mostly by my hand, it’ll be classified as “iron.”
• Notes that only contain a small bit of information will be tagged as “copper”.

The premise is that the more developed a note is, the higher its mineral classification.

• Some ideas that didn’t survive…
• Category notes or other big umbrella notes will have its own name as a tag (i.e. Theravada Buddhism note will have buddhism/theravada tag).
  • Found it too redundant.

Symbols

A note’s symbols identifies what it’s about. In the index I mentioned that there are certain functions that are available to me in the vault that are not in this site. The symbols next to links are one of these functionalities. I’m hoping to eventually find a solution to this.

• Copper: 🜠 – These are “simple” or “atomic-adjacent” notes.
• Iron: 🜝 – These are notes that are substantial.
• Silver: 🜛 – These are the notes that I have created myself. My “original writing,” if you will.
• Gold: 🜚 – Category notes.
• Calendar: 🝮 – Notes relating to time, whether they’re daily notes, yearly notes, etc.
• Articles: 🗟 – Self-explanatory.
• Posts: 🖁 – Source is a post.
• Papers: † – Academic/research papers.
• Meta: ❦ – Notes that either refer to the vault or that refer to things in my real life.
• Academia: 🏛 – Self-explanatory.
• Segno: 𝄋 – Music notes.
• Dissolve: 🝡 – Tasks that need to be done (dissolved!).
• Quintessence: 𝓠 – ??
• Amalgam: 🝛 – Notes that are about me. Self.
• Person: 🅯 – Note is about an individual
• Alembic: 🝪 – Project note. Get it? You add things to an alembic to create other stuff? So you add tasks which will result in the project being completed? “Isn’t the symbol for tasks literally to dissolve? What are you adding?” Shut your trap.
• Limbu exclamation mark: ᥄ – Inbox note.
• Purify: 🝣 – Notes that relate to pharmacology/nootropics.

AI

While I am not absolutely opposed to the presence of AI generated text, I only tolerate it in its most minimal form. It is rare to find it anywhere in my vault, but I’m sure there might be some somewhere. There are a handful of generated AI images but those are for personal use only. The majority of my AI use (97%) is for understanding concepts that I have trouble grasping; therefore it is information that stays outside the vault unless synthesized. That is not accounting for the exceptions that are bound to pop up, be that because I forgot to write it in my own words or because it didn’t really made sense to.
